I spoke with hubby this afternoon, after he pulled a 17 hour shift. He was on his way to his "tent bed" to get some rest. Now I understand why it feel so good to come home after being on a fire assignment and climbing into his own bed with clean sheets. I have no idea where our husbands find the strength and stamina, to work in extreme conditions for long hours, then find rest on the ground. I guess when you're tired, you can sleep practically standing up (don't try at home....lol). I know I take for granted the fact that at the end of the night, I get to crawl in our clean sheets and rest my head on a soft pillow.
I remember him telling me (last year on a fire assignment) they pulled a 24 hour shift on the line. When he went to turn in their times, the timekeeper, said "did you have a space blanket?" He said "yes" and she replied, "then you need to show a rest period of 6 hours on your time sheet." Are you serious!?! That's considered rest!!! The fact that he probably propped his head on a rock and laid next to his gear for a short time, is considered rest. That's just crazy!!
So next time you lay down on your pillow, under your clean sheets; just know that your husband is working hard and finding sleep on rocks and the ground.
