It was a quiet evening in our house, and we were both talking about how after this week, things would be getting busier getting ready for FIRE SEASON. RING, RING, RING "Hello," I said.
"Hi is (husband's name) there?" the manly voice asked.
"Hold on, let me get him" as I walked the phone to my husband.
"Hello, oh Hi. Okay, where? Okay......Okay, ya I'll give them a call" was all my husband said.
"What, what, what's going on" asked little ol' Nosy, Rosy me.
"You're not going to believe this but I have a fire assignment" replied my husband as he searched for his call back list. (The Captains & Chiefs have a phone list to call people after work hours for fire assignments.)
"WHAT, are you joking me? It's only early April!"
He told me the details and he notified his crew. Packing his fire bag ("the red war bag") and getting all the information he needed, he prepared for the first fire assignment in 2007. He had to wake up around 4:30 am, and leave by 5:00 am. And not to boast, but I always get up and get his coffee going and get him some breakfast. Let me TOOT TOOT my horn!! After speaking to the ICP (Incident Command Post) he was suprised they hadn't cancelled him because they recieved light rain on the 3000 acre fire.
I recieved a phone call about 5 hours later from my tired husband, who shared with me that they had been cancelled and were headed back home. He was tired from waking so early, but it was a scheduled day off, so he was getting OVERTIME (my favorite word)!
So as I sit here today wondering what FIRE WIFE story to share, it had to be that early Fire Assignment call. Could this be a sign of a busy season??
If you have a funny FIRE ASSIGNMENT CALL story email it to me so I can post it to share.
