FAMILY DAY 2009: food and waves good-bye

My husband's crew has a FAMILY DAY each year right after their training and before the season gets busy. Everyone brings a little something and there is a lot of yummy food. We had chips, salsa (I made home-made), carne asada, tortillas and lots of yummy desserts, too. We were enjoying the afternoon under the oak trees at this park meeting all the FFs and their families. All of the sudden we hear "BEEP, BEEP, BEEP" and every family member knows when you hear those, you freeze. That is the pre-alert tones for a vegetation fire. As luck would have it, the crew was dispatched to a fire in the area. As little ones waved good-bye and yelled "bye daddy" and some of us snuck out a quick kiss, we watched the crew put on their fire shirts, load up in their rigs and off they went with their lights flashing. So those of us who were left behind, were left to clean up the stuff. We packaged it all up, loaded most of it in my car, and the BBQer in another FF's dad's truck, picked up our trash and said our good-byes.
What a way to end the picnic. Kinda sad, but we all know it is part of their jobs and we have to be flexible.

Aww! That's a bummer that Family Day was cut short! I think Bear Divide had theirs this past weekend too! I know they had their Old Hotshot night and the hubby went to that.
Hope all is well! 3 more weeks until graduation on our end :)

Hugs!
