****DISCLAIMER****
I am very thankful that no property and/or lives have been harmed by wildfires this year. I am posting this with thoughts from a Wildland Fire Fighter's wife's point of view.
This year has been extremely SLOW! I know that nationally things haven't been as busy as they have in past seasons! We infact have been married over 10 years and have never experienced this slow of a season. I know the weather is playing a big role in this fire season. However, I feel horrible for my husband & his crew as they wait each day for the tones of a dispatch or a phone call for an off forest assignment. Our radio traffic on the scanners cover both CalFire & USFS, so everytime you hear the tones for a call, you freeze, only to hear "Medical Aid...."
Again, let me express that I am grateful no property and/or lives have been lost in WF, I know my husband trains and lives for this time of year when he is used to fighting WF. After talking with him last night, he explained it like so:
Imagine there were absolutely no crime, no criminals, and no speeders. Cops would be bored out of their minds. Then if they heard of an incident in a town farther away, they'd get their hopes up for a call for backup.
Again, this is not to say I'm thankful for crime.....I AM NOT!!
It's just a picture to compare how bored the guys (and girls) are. I am hoping that for their sanity sakes we at least start going to some small fires. I hope this season will pickup and not be so SLOW!
