In December, my husband I and I both had the opportunity to interview with Ann Curry, from Dateline NBC. The day before the actual interview, a cameraman and the producer showed up to our house, to shot "B Roll" as they call it. They were filming our family life and how we as a Wildland fire family operate. I was so shocked to see how big of deal this was. I thought I'd just do the interview with Ann, and a camera guy and producer. When my husband & I showed up to the fire station, the District Ranger, a PIO from Boise, about 3-4 camera/sound guys, a producer and Ann Curry. Lots of lights and wow, the magic they can do with cameras!!! I actually got my moment of "stardom" with Ann. Probably the most memorable, was when she called me outside to fix a blemish with her powder!! How many people can say Ann Curry used her powder on them!!! She made the interview feel like we were visiting. She was asking me about the Hotshot Prayer that I wrote, how being a Wildland FF Wife and dealing with the stress of my husband's job has an affect on me. She was also asking about the blog. She also interviewed my husband on some things about climate change and how that affects fires. She also spoke to him about how having a family at home affects his job. Of course his words to her, made me cry (in the room of the interview). Knowing how he really feels about us and hearing him say it on camera, was so moving to me. Being a Wildland FF Wife, truly is a rare and special part of the Wildland community. I'm not sure when they'll air the interview, but when I find out, I'll post it online. The whole experience still is surreal to me, as well as a honor to put a voice to Wildland FF Wives.
She was one of the nicest people I've ever met. Very friendly and personal. After the interview we stood outside and chatted about our personal lives. It was nice to visit with a star, someone who the whole world knows. Ann Curry is definitely one of my favorite TV reporters!!
This is the after interview (off camera) visit with Ann Curry, my husband & I. |
