Are you in shape???

My friend joked one day, and said if we want to get in shape, we should think about becoming a hotshot. I laughed so hard. "There's no way we'd even survive a run, let alone hiking up the steepest mountains with gear on our backs. I think we'd roll all the way down the mountain, like a rock. My walking exercises were helping, but I just wasn't getting into shape like I wanted to. So hubby and I joined the local gym and I got a personal trainer. She was in the Marine Corp. and is very fit. I train with her 3 times a week for 1 hour. By the end of our session, I feel like jell-o. She said she's proud of me for not quitting, even though there are a few times, I have to slow my pace running the stairs. She's a tough cookie, but I'm confident with her help, I can get in shape. I truly admire all the firefighters both structure and wildland for their strength. I mean, could you really carry a 200 pound person out of a burning building or hike a steep mountain with 50 pounds on your back, in the heat??? My husband feels horrible because he used to run faster than most of his crew, but as time goes by he can't run faster than most of these "young" firefighters. BUT, come on, if you can still hike, carry weight and work in the hot, dry conditions -- you are in great shape!! I guess some of us are cut out to do the job and others are cut out to support those who do the job. I'm happy to be the support!!!

I love my firefighter said...

This story makes me laugh because it reminds me of:
I am one of those what people call lucky becasue I am slender, but that does not mean I am in shape. My husband and I decided we would start working out and running together in the fall after fire season. Our first run and our last run. We started off fine but I could not run any more. I started to walk and my husband started treating me like one of the guys to keep me going. I got mad, turned around and walked home. When he came home he asked "what happen to you" I responded "I will never run with you again because you forgot that I am not one of the guys/gals on your crew" anyway we have talked about it and we are going to try again this fall 3 years later. I will let you know how it goes.
My husband is also a determined to be the fastest on his crew. I think PT is almost as dangerous for him as fighting a fire.
