My husband has been in fire since he graduated from high school and loves it.
So here is my story:
We got engaged in January 2003, I work in agriculture which keeps me as busy if not some years busier than my husband. So we were planning on a December wedding so I was for sure to have a groom and time to have the wedding of my dreams. The grooms man planned a bachelor party the weekend before, which of course consisted of a few firefighters and my crew to help me get some of the decorating (you know like lifting the heavy stuff and hanging christmas lights stuff like that) done that was to start on Monday. It is Sunday evening and the phone rang and my living room is full of tired recovering men. It was dispatch and there was a fire assignment and the crew was there and 30 minutes later they were gone. I was a little weary of this phone call thinking it was a joke, it had to be it is December with 2 inches of snow on the ground, but it was not. Thank God it was on forest and only lasted 2 days because of the snow. But who would have ever thought in December, it is just the way it goes in this lifestyle. Do not count on anything for sure until you are done with it and they were there for it. The decorating got done and I had a groom and it was the best day of my life.

I know what you mean. I always figured my hubby would be home for the winter holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I found out that just because "fire season is over" doesn't mean he will be home it just means Hurricane season has started. The year Hurricane Katrina and Rita hit, my hubby was actually gone longer than he was for fires doing clean up. I just try to enjoy the time we do have and make the best of when he is gone by spending time with family and friends.
Thanks for the comment on my story. This is such a nice way to know that I am not the only one out there that thinks being a firefighters wife is a challenge. I also realize we are normal for our lifestyle we have choosen to live because sometimes I am not sure if I am going to make it during fire season between my hubbies job, my job, keeping the household together, and raising our son. I do not know how single moms do it.
Aren't single moms amazing?!? At least we know there is a light at the end of the tunnel even if we don't know how soon. It really is nice to know there is someone else out there who understands though. This season has been relatively easy because we moved right in the middle so he missed a lot of the big fires. Next year should be interesting. Thankfully our son will be a little older and hopefully easier to take care of and keep entertained.
